Some answers to our most commonly asked questions

We are often asked. By home renovators, suppliers and new customers. When and where they need to fit fire doors. If it’s necessary and, if so, to what specification they should be created.

Understanding fire doors (and any doors) can be a complex subject, which is why we offer services to help guide the creation of your door.

Our technical team are available via phone and email in the meantime we can hopefully clear up some questions below.

  • How quickly can you produce a bespoke door?

Our shortest lead times on bespoke doors is 10 days for standing timber, 12 days for laminates and 15 days or more for technical doors – you will be advised by our technical team a more accurate lead time once you have designed your door.

  • Are the products manufactured by KNOWLES?

All of our bespoke doors are manufactured in-house, as each door has varied technical ratings we may buy cores from supplies to suit project needs. Our standard doors are manufactured to suit different sizes so some pre-styled doors may also be bought-in and manufactured to suit technical ratings.

  • How do I know what Acoustic rating my door can achieve?

Acoustic ratings are a tricky subject unless you're an acoustic engineer. If you'd like to discuss the acoustic variations we offer, we can advise the best door for your project needs. You can do this by form or phone.

  • I need new doors for a building - what do I need to consider?

When renovating or creating a new building, you should consider all building regulations; Fire, Health & Safety including vision panel regulations.

We would recommend speaking to health and safety advisor for building regulations in your local governing body.

  • Can I request a Fire-Rating?

Of course! Every door has a different rating, if you’re looking for your door to hit a specific rating please select ‘fire’ and the rating you wish for it to achieve.

FD30 – Half an hour burn time.
FD60 – An hour burn time.
FD120 – Two hours burn time.

If your door is fire-rated you will need a certified fitter to install your door, you will be given a certificate of the rating upon purchase.

  • Do KNOWLES offer an installation service?

Unfortunately we don’t offer an installation service, however, we can recommend using Check a trade to find a local carpenter or installer of fire-safe products.

  • What seals and strips do I need for my fire door?

Each fire door will have test evidence that stipulates the type and density of door frame, the correct intumescent strips and ironmongery (handles, hinges etc.) that should be used.

Without following these recommendations, there is no guarantee that your fire rating is correct.

*Also, remember your fire doors must be closed. As they only work when closed!

  • Can I add a fire door to my current door frame?

There is nothing to say that you cannot have fire doors installed in your home. However, before doing so you should check the following:

Check whether a fire door will fit within the current frame:
FD30 fire doors are usually 44mm thick, compared to a standard door thickness of 35mm.
All fire doors that are newly fitted should be fitted by a professional as they will not perform correctly in the event of a fire without proper installation.
Without following these recommendations, there is no guarantee that your fire rating is correct.

  • I am replacing my internal doors - do I need to consider fitting fire doors?

If you are replacing the internal door and your home doesn’t currently have any fire doors, then fire doors aren’t necessary (but might improve the safety of your home).
